Have you heard of the mass protests against the Serbian government and President Aleksandar Vucic? Starting in May 2023, a sequence of large-scale demonstrations commenced in Belgrade and various parts of Serbia. These protests were primarily sparked by the tragic Belgrade school shooting by a thirteen-year-old boy and a mass murder incident near the cities of Mladenovac and Smederevo. Known as “Serbia Against Violence,” these protests consistently drew tens of thousands of participants, with each subsequent protest since May 8th witnessing a significant turnout.

Firstly, since these protests were caused by mass shootings and murder, the people also think that the Serbian government is forming a culture of violence and want to instead create a Serbia with peaceful culture. But, Vucic is a person known for slamming his critics and still has four years left in his presidential term. Serbia is in an uncertain future but popular actor, Dragan Bjelogrlic told the rally, “The fact that your young people have taken to the streets with a clear message that you will no longer live in this diseased society gives hope that maybe we will lift ourselves up,” Police Major Danijela Ostojic said that more than 120 student threats and posts of inappropriate content on social networks had been reported in Serbia in the past few days.

Secondly, these protests are not only caused by school shootings and mass murders but also how Vucic is not able to prevent television channels and news broadcasters from showing violent content. For example, opposition parties accuse Serbia’s government of failing to take action against television channels broadcasting violent content. It has additionally been claimed that the Serbian government is not taking action against illicit laws within society, leading to calls for the resignation of Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic. Serbian pro-government reality shows regularly show violence, but unsigned TV spots on pro-government channels are often exploited to amplify political attacks on journalists from independent media outlets. “I came here to protest against living in this country the way it is now, against violence which is visible everywhere in public speech, in media, against this evil we are living in and against the way this country is being led,” says a university professor who said her name was Vera told Reuters news agency.

In conclusion, since Serbian shows and reality TV show violence on a regular basis this can influence people, such as the thirteen-year-old who was the culprit of the Belgrade school shooting. Vucic and the Serbian government are probably not aware of the violent culture they are displaying to their people who want a peaceful and calm display instead.
