In May, China sent 30 warplanes to Taiwan’s air defense zone. China has full power and is very determined to take over Taiwan, but it would come at an extreme cost.
According to BBC News, China claims Taiwan is a breakaway province that needs to be reunited with the mainland, and they will do it by force if necessary.
BBC News states that in the 1940s, both were separated due to the civil war, but now China insists that they have Taiwan back. As a result, the United States, Taiwan’s biggest ally, promises to protect Taiwan in the event of an attack from China. After China’s warning, the U.S. sent naval ships to Taiwan’s waters.
In May, President Joe Biden gave his warning to Beijing that the U.S. was committed to defending Taiwan.
Top U.S. general and chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, Gen Milley, told BBC:
“In terms of capability, I think China clearly is developing a capability. President Xi [Jinping] has mentioned that in public forums, he’s mentioned it in speeches, that he has challenged the PLA [China’s People’s Liberation Army] to develop the capability to attack Taiwan at some point in time. Gen Milley added, “There’s no indications or warnings of anything imminent at this time. But again, we watch it very, very closely.”
However, there is an inevitable question that is raised: will the U.S. really be able to stop the attack on Taiwan? Perhaps not.
According to CNN News, China’s amount of troops, missiles, and ships would still be more than Taiwan, the U.S. and Japan combined. With this being said, China has the full capability to take over Taiwan.
But, of course, China’s attack would be extremely costly and would be disastrous. Not only that, but the civilian carnage would be tremendous and bloody. According to BBC News, the U.S. would also be hesitant to engage in military conflict in Asia but will be keeping a close eye on China.
China’s attack is not imminent, but this doesn’t mean Taiwan and its allies should let their guards down. China has full power in this situation: they may strike whenever and are determined to take over Taiwan. All Taiwan can do is prepare and hope that this won’t cause another disastrous war.
