On Friday, somebody in Chicago won $1.34 billion dollars from the Mega Millions jackpot! It was the nation’s third-largest prize in history.

To play Mega Millions, players pick five numbers from 1-70 for the white balls, and one number from 1-25 for the gold Mega Ball. That day, the numbers were 13, 36, 45, 57, 67, and 14 for the Mega Ball. That person matched every single number, so they won the lottery.

That person bought a ticket from a Speedway gas station’s convenience store in Des Plaines during a Friday night draw. It has not yet been revealed who this person is, but people really want to find out.

As Pat McDonald, the Ohio Lottery Director, said, “We are thrilled to have witnessed one of the biggest jackpot wins in Mega Millions history. We’re eager to find out who won and look forward to congratulating them soon!”

The prize actually grows over time, probably to encourage more people to play. Starting from very small just after the previous win on April 25, the prize got bigger and bigger until the person won.

The winner has been advised by Emily Irwin, the managing director at Wells Fargo’s Wealth and Investment Management, not to reveal who he is just yet. They say that if the winner reveals to the world who he is, he might get attacked by scammers, robbers, and a lot of bad guys trying to steal the money. The winner might get injured or killed, too.

Pratik Patel, head of Family Wealth Strategies, has more advice for after the winner gets the money. Patel warned, “You may be interested in owning your favorite basketball team, but maybe that isn’t a good idea if it uses up all your money.”
