On June 25, 2022, two people were killed, and 21 were wounded in a shooting outside an Oslo gay bar. The police report cites the suspect is a 42-year-old man who has been charged with murder, terrorist acts, and attempted murder.
shooting occurred near London Pub, which describes itself as “the largest gay and lesbian venue in Oslo.” Police received multiple calls about the shooting at 1:14 a.m. local time, they arrived at the scene minutes later. They caught the male suspect three minutes after arrival.
The suspect was a Norwegian citizen originally from Iran and, according to prosecutor Christian Hatlo, was “known to the police” but has only received “minor convictions” up until now,
Norway’s domestic intelligence service said they are working to clarify whether more of these acts of violence may have been planned after the shooting.
“Our overall assessment is that there are grounds to believe that he wanted to cause grave fear in the population,” Hatlo said. “We need to go through his medical history if he has any. It’s not something that we’re aware of now.”
Oslo’s Pride parade, scheduled for Saturday, was canceled.
Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said calling it off did not deter the fight “against discrimination, prejudices, and hate.” He described how thousands of people had gathered to parade on the street with rainbow flags and flowers.
The White House was shocked by the killings. ‘We’re all horrified by the mass shooting in Oslo today, targeting the LGBTWI+ community there. And our house our hearts obviously go out to all the families of the victims, the people of Norway, which is a tremendous ally,’ John Kirby, the NSC coordinator for strategic communications, told reporters aboard Air Force One as President Biden was flying to Europe.
