After a humiliating 4-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds with only 7 hits overall, the then-manager Walter Alston singled out Steve Garvey in the locker room, and asked if he had ever played first.
Garvey calmly responded, “Oh, sure,” despite never having played first. Later that night marked the first time one of the most decorated infielders would play together over a span of more than a decade.
From that moment on, the infielders were Ron Cey, Bill Russell, and Davey Lopes. The lineup remained unchanged for the following 8 1/2 years.
Together, they won the 1981 World Series, four National League pennants, and 21 All-Star Game appearances.
Despite already being extremely successful, Russell claims “It’s just like your family, we didn’t take anything for granted back then. You had to be successful to be together that long.”
And Garvey was there. One of the four players who helped the Dodgers overcome the New York Yankees and win their first World Series in 16 years. Four-time Gold Glove winner. NL Most Valuable Player in 1974.
Garvey stated, “All four of us have taken a lot of pride in it when you look at the successes, the longevity, and the service to the Dodger organization and baseball.
