The Neanderthal people roamed the earth many years ago. New research shows that these people made paintings and marks on the walls of caves.
Scientists found red ochre pigments on stalactites in the Cave of Ardales. When they analyzed cave samples, which showed that the pigments were foreign, the surface texture of the paint also indicated that it was most likely applied by splattering or blowing.
The cave analyses also support that the paintings were old, most likely being created 65,000 years ago. This supports the theory that ancient people were avid art makers.
The Neanderthals swept their fingers on the once soft cave walls, and this would make lines or dots on the stone. This technique is known as finger fluting, but it is still unknown why they made the marks or what they mean. These pictures are known as the first forms of art.
The cave collapsed on itself approximately 50,000 years ago, and the painting itself is around 75,000 years ago. After the cave-in, scientists believe that no one else had entered the cave, which they think proves that the Neanderthal created the cave paintings.
The cave paintings and marks show us a lot about our past, including how ancient people may have seen the world and if they knew how to make paint. Although we may not yet totally understand what they mean, we must preserve the ancient drawings as it is an important part of our history
