Australia on June 24, 2022 in an attempt to fix their relationship and ease tensions from recent years.

Relations between the two countries were already very hostile. Australians didn’t like the Chinese military dominance in the South China Sea and perceived it as a threat. In 2018, Australians became the first Western government to block Chinese telecommunications.

Recent associations have not only not made progress, but also worsened the situation. Scott Morrison, the former Prime Minister of Australia, hired international investigators to investigate China, the origin of the coronavirus, which enraged China. Peter Dutton, the Australian Defense Minister, then stated that China was acting like Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

Xiao Qian, China’s Australian ambassador, used speeches and private meetings to make overtures that Beijing wants better relations with Australia. “There is every reason for China and Australia to be friends and partners, rather than adversaries,” Xiao stated in a speech at the University of Technology Sydney.

Australia and China also rely on each other economically. China is Australia’s largest two-way trading partner, and Australia is China’s sixth largest trading partner. This has made it important for them to fix their relationship.

China and Australia have been taking strides to boost their interconnection. “Already there have been some improvements, but there’s a long way to go.” says Anthony Albanse, Australia’s current Prime Minister.
