When an odd pink glow lit up the sky of Mildura, Australia on Wednesday night, the residents were left dumbfounded and wondering if they had just witnessed an alien invasion.

Tammy Szumowski, who is a local resident, and her family, had believed that the world was ending. Later, she said “I was just like ‘What the hell is that?’ It is very bizarre, this huge pink light in the sky, I’m trying not to freak out because I’ve got my girls in the car.”

But some of the other residents decided to try and find an explanation.

Anne Webster, a lawmaker that represents the Australian Parliament said, “I was driving home and it was dark, and I noticed a very unusual, quite large pink glow, I thought that was very strange. My first thought was there has to be a logical reason for this.”

The pink glow actually was caused by a medical cannabis facility that is located at the outskirts of Mildura, and it accidentally revealed its previously secret location when they decided to test their LED lights, which created the creepy pink glow that had spooked the residents of the town.

The facility usually uses blackout curtains to help hide the LED lights that were being used to help with plant growth. But the curtains had been left open by accident during one test of the LED lights, causing the glow and exposing the facility, which is located southeast of Victoria.

The first company that was permitted to do cannabis research in Australia was Cann Group, and it got a $1.4 million grant from the state government of Victoria, part of which was used to make a medical cannabis facility in an unknown location, until the glow revealed it. The new facility was constructed on an old juice factory and got its first batch this month.
