NASA’S new SLS rocket has passed its final stage of development, the ultimate test. In the Kennedy Space Center, the agency said the rocket did not need any more tests with only finishing touches such as resealing the hydrogen gas tank needed.
NASA said they will not need to repeat the tests with SLS as, they have already completed the most important one. The test was called the “wet dress rehearsal” where 700,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen were fully filled into the spaceship for it to be launched.
When they were finished with preparing the SLS they began the countdown. But within 30 seconds of the launch the hydrogen gas tank had a leak. So, they had to call the launch off.
Even though there was a leak, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, the Artemis launch director said that it was a very successful day. “It was a very successful day, and we accomplished a majority of the objectives that we had not completed in the prior test.”
NASA directors aren’t sure on whether they should repeat the test again for more data, which would bring them to their fifth attempt. They already had lots of information, so they decided to not retest this masterpiece. On Thursday, NASA had enough information to proceed to the first launch.
This launch was known as the Artemis 1, it was used for sending the Orion capsule into space in which it would rotate around the moon without any astronauts. Around 2024 Artemis 2 will be sent to space with astronauts, but not having the ability to land on the moon quite yet. The Artemis spacecraft be able to land on the moon until 2025.
The mission was a success while just messing up the test a slight bit.
