After losing the first set against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Saturday, July 2, Nick Kyrgios of Australia came back and won 3 sets in a row.
While most people are expecting a men’s final of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, there is a third contender for the win. Nick Kyrgios has a lot of talent, but also creates a lot of drama with his disruptive personality. Wherever Kyrgios goes, he almost always does something newsworthy. Whether its arguing with referees or smashing rackets, his acts are always unexpected and also garner thousands of dollars in fines.
His match with Tsitsipas was no different. He complained to the referee multiple times for not defaulting Tsitsipas when he angrily sent a ball into the stands, almost hitting a spectator. Kyrgios claimed that the referee would have done it to him if he had sent the ball.
Tsitsipas was not happy about Kyrgios’s constant complaints, and slowly lost his temper. He started trying to hit Kyrgios with the balls. More than 10,000 people watched from the stands as the tennis match became more than just a tennis match.
The drama only escalated afterwards, as their news conferences devolved into a full-on war against each other.
“It’s constant bullying, that’s what he does,” Tsitsipas said of Kyrgios. “He bullies the opponents. He was probably a bully at school himself. I don’t like bullies. I don’t like people that put other people down. He has some good traits in his character, as well. But when he — he also has a very evil side to him, which if it’s exposed, it can really do a lot of harm and bad to the people around him.”
After Tsitsipas’s claims, Kyrgios fired back with his own insults.
“We’re not cut from the same cloth,” he said of Tsitsipas. “I go up against guys who are true competitors. If he’s affected by that today, then that’s what’s holding him back, because someone can just do that and that’s going to throw him off his game like that. I just think it’s soft.”
Kyrgios will continue in the tournament, and who knows how far he can go.
