On July 1st, 2022, in Russia, Ivan Fedotov, who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers was detained by the Russian government because he skipped military service. The Philadelphia Flyers “are aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.”
On the same day, American basketball player, Brittney Griner was arrested for bringing what Russian Authorities call “vape cartridges and bearing traces of hash oil” in her luggage. Griner’s supporters say that Russian Authorities are using Griner as bait towards the United States because the United States supported Ukraine ever since Russia invaded the country.
25-year-old Fedotov was born in Finland, and grew up in Russia. He is a 6-foot-7 goalie, who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers on May 7th. He was expected to compete for a spot on the roster at training camp in the fall. In the Winter Games in Beijing, he earned a silver medal for his team.
According to David Waldstein, a sports reporter for The New York Times, he stated, “a spokesman for the National Hockey League said the league was aware of the situation but would not comment further.”
Fedotov is one of the best goalies in the league with a 2.00 goals against average. When he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers, he noticed how much improvement he made since the team signed with him. Even so, his detainment might be increasing concerns for the future of Russian hockey.
“Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development. He’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship,” says Chuck Fletcher, Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations and general manager.
