Being well-liked brings big advantages and can lead to positive social interactions and relationships. However, the importance of being well-liked differs from person to person.
I, Phoebe, have lots of thoughts on this. I spend time thinking about this every day, and I have come up with a conclusion – but it isn’t a solid answer.
The advantages of being favored are powerful and can be used in lots of circumstances. For example, it is easier to socialize, as you may meet more people as you move through life. More friends will emerge as the friends that like you introduce you to new ones.
An example of this can be seen in the book Counting by 7s. Willow Chance, the main character, starts as a strange nerdy introvert that everybody ignores. But as she meets Dell Duke, a counselor she visited after “cheating” on a test, her friend circle grows. She meets a girl named Mai, and after nailing Mai’s language Vietnamese, they become good friends. After this, she begins meeting more people.
Most people enjoy relationships with those that are popular. This can also apply to your job. Most people work in teams, and advanced individuals may join your team because they have heard about you. Then, you may get promoted because your team works well, or your boss favors you. As we can see, being well-liked by others improves both our social life and economic life.
One time, when I was new to a school, no one had picked me into their team, and I was stuck with the trouble-maker. But as I socialized more and made new friends, people were able to understand me more – thus, I had more interactions with the students.
As great as this seems, we also have to keep in mind that being well-liked shouldn’t be our ultimate goal. We shouldn’t do things for others, instead we should prosper for ourselves. Even if you aren’t admired, that doesn’t mean you are a bad person. Just continue working hard because if others observe that you are, they will naturally want to start a conversation with you and spend time with you. If they see that you love yourself, that means that you can see values in others too. This will naturally make you well-liked among others.
This proves that to be well-liked we don’t have to purposely accommodate others. If we stay authentic, people of value may show up. When this happens, we try our best to leave a good impression because the friendship will benefit us both. Just go with the flow, and approval from others will come along.
