There is a shipwreck from 300 years ago that has been discovered off the coast of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. This ship is not an ordinary ship, it is the HMS Gloucester a ship that sank on the 6th of May. First on board was the duke of York who became King James ll, the king of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

The trouble started when James ll started arguing with the pilot about which route to take, they ended up taking the route that the pilot didn’t want to take. It was the preferred route James ll wanted to take. The ship hit some sand banks and started to sink. Around an hour later the ship fully sank about 200 people died, nobody was supposed to leave the ship until James ll left, which it was at the last minute.

James ll blamed the pilot for choosing the wrong route and killing innocent people he wanted the pilot gone instead of being killed the pilot was put in prison.

The ship was discovered in 2007 by brothers, Julian and Lincoln Barnwell. Lincoln said, “The first thing I saw was a large cannon laying on the sand it was awe-inspiring and really beautiful.”

Professor Claire Jowitt is an expert on maritime history. She said, “the discovery was the most significant maritime discovery since the raising of the Mary Rose in 1982.”

Unfortunately, the HMS shipwreck went down so fast that very few items in the ship were brought out with the people. Thus, there are only a couple of remaining artifacts that can tell us about life in the 17 century.

Items found on the ship will be displayed at the Norwich Castle Museum in 2023.
