HIV Patients are now cured due to Stem Cell Transplant

A 66-year-old man was cured of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) when he received a stem cell transplant on July 27. This made doctors believe that they may one day be able edit a person’s genes and recreate mutations to then cure patients who have the virus that causes AIDS.

First of all, though, what is HIV? HIV is a type of virus that will destroy a person’s immune system. If it is untreated, it will develop into AIDS, which is also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

With this discovery, doctors have been able to cure many patients of HIV.

“When I was diagnosed with HIV in 1988, like many others, I thought it was a death sentence,” said a patient from the City of Hope. “I never thought I would live to see the day when I no longer have HIV.”

There have been many more patients like the one from the City of Hope. Now that science and technology are advancing, so is medical knowledge. So, if you have HIV and you need help, there is now hope.
