Ever heard of the term flash flood? Well, Kentucky experienced one of the worst ones ever this week. Flash floods may not seem all that terrifying, but trust me, they are. This devastating flood killed at least 25 people, including six children.

The Flooding

People in Kentucky are still stranded out there and need help, but it seems as if everyone else there is doing their part and pulling together in the disaster. After a tour of the flooded areas with the National Guard, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the flood was one of the worst ones he had seen: “There’s still a lot of people out there, still a lot of people unaccounted for. We’re going to do our best to find them all,” he said, warning that it will take a long time to find all the victims. People who live in the flash flood areas have never seen anything like this—it is truly terrible. Businesses, homes, wildlife, and so much more have been affected by the traumatic experience. “There is widespread poverty in affected areas, where at least 33,000 people now have no electricity. The flooding—after torrential rains—caused mudslides and made roads impassable,” BBC News states. Some areas got so bad that they received 8 inches of rain in just 24 hours. Among the hundreds of flash floods that have occurred over the years in Kentucky, people are saying that this one is by far the worst one yet. Bill Haneberg, an expert on climate and the state’s geologist, said that this rainfall event is “astonishing” for Kentucky. “He added that the increases in the amounts of rainfall in recent years are consistent with what experts have predicted for the region—that Kentucky’s climate would become hotter and wetter due to climate change,” BBC News says. To make matters worse, this was what Kentucky got after a very deadly tornado in December 2021.

Whether this is going to be the last flood this year or not, the damage done will definitely take a long time to repair. Hopefully, everyone will be rescued and not a soul spared!
