Have you ever heard the song Sweet Caroline? If you have, have you ever seen it being blasted after an English football victory?
Sweet Caroline first came out in 1969. This song was written by Neil Diamond, an American rock star. He wrote the love song about his wife, Marcia, but realized the name didn’t fit. He changed it to Caroline when he saw a magazine featuring Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy.
But why did this love song become an English football song? Paul Carr, a professional in popular music analysis at the University of South Wales, writes that the song Sweet Caroline is successful because of phrases such as, “Good times never felt so good” and “Reaching out, touching me, touching you,” before the build-up to the chorus and the words “Sweet Caroline, ba, ba, baa.”
It turned out that at the end of this exciting football game, the song was played accidently, by chance.
An eight-year-old girl named Tess was caught on the cameras waving her hands and singing along.
“I found out when Sweet Caroline finished. My mum kept getting texts from people saying, ‘Tess is on telly, Tess is on telly!'” she said. “When I’m older I want to be a footballer, so I was looking at how they were celebrating and thinking of how I was going to celebrate.”
