Djokovic Wins Wimbledon Against Kyrgios After Several Disappointing Losses This Year

After Rafael Nadal dropped out of Wimbledon due to his injuries, Djokovic and Kyrgios faced off in the final. Djokovic beat the unpredictable Kyrgios 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

This win hauled Djokovic to seven Wimbledon men’s singles titles, pulling him even with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw and leaving him one behind Roger Federer. It also provided him a fourth straight Wimbledon title and 21st Grand Slam singles title, within one of Rafael Nadal and one ahead of Federer.

Djokovic won it in his usual way, gaining an advantage over Krygios’s serve. He won it with breaks at 2-1 ahead in the second set and 4-4 in the third, the latter from 40-love down. And he won it by maintaining a calm and experienced mindset, while Krygios picked fights with the chair umpire and yammered on and on to his team in the Friends Box.

The win also served as a way to beat what seemed an imposing deadline in 2022. With the United States not allowing noncitizen/nonresidents to enter the country without a coronavirus vaccine, it appeared he would miss his chance to attend the U.S Open because of his staunch opposition to the vaccine. Wimbledon may have been his last chance at a grand slam for the 2022 year.

The win was also a highlight of the year, as Djokovic had previously not been able to attend the Australian Open due to deportation and lost to Rafael Nadal in a quarterfinal for a clay tournament in Rome.
