At this year’s Wimbledon in England, controversial player Nick Krygios makes it to the round of 16 in a fiery match with Stefanos Tisitsipas.
Kyrgios is a very talented Australian player who is most notably known for his temper and antics on the court. His often unprofessional behavior includes spats with umpires and judges and smashing racquets, which frequently earn him tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
He attracts plenty of attention with his share of talent and drama. He is described as a “dream and a nightmare” for the sport with his temperamental displays during matches. Twitter users noted that his displays were “unmissable theater”.
On Saturday night, Krygios won against Tisitsipas in a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7) match. During the match, Krygios continuously pestered the chair umpire and tournament referees about their decision to not default Tisitspias after he sent a ball into the crowd, nearly hitting a spectator. He complained that if he had done that, the umpire would have sent him off.
The constant barrage of complaints and interruptions caused Tisitsipas to struggle to maintain composure; at one point in the game, he complained to the chair umpire that “only one person on the court was interested in playing tennis, while the other was turning the match into a circus.”
The theatrics only escalated further after the match ended in the players’ respective news conferences. The interviews descended into insults and name-calling. Tisitsipas referred to Krygios as a bully, but expressed regret for when he hit the ball into the crowd.
Later, Kyrgios had his news conference, where he called Tisitipas “soft” for letting the complaints get to him, saying, “I go up against guys who are true competitors. If he’s affected by that today, then that’s what’s holding him back, because someone can just do that and that’s going to throw him off his game like that. I just think it’s soft.”
With his victory against Tsitsipas, Krygios will advance to the round of 16, where he will play American Brandon Nakashima, setting up a potential match with Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.
