This past Wednesday, Andrew Gillum, the former democratic nominee who lost the 2018 Florida election against Ron DeSantis, surrendered to federal authorities in Tallahassee. He, along with his another associate, have been charged with 19 counts of fraudulent actions and conspiracy. These claims were first levied for fraud over use of raised funds during his campaigns.
Accompanied by close friends and news reporters, Mr. Gillum pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday afternoon. He left the case without speaking a word to the many microphones awaiting outside. The former Democrat came within 32,000 votes of becoming the state’s first black governor in 2018, but he would soon lose his political involvement to personal struggles. Police had found him and a close friend on a potential drug overdose in a Miami beach hotel room.
The fraud and conspiracy charges have been related to his involvement with Ms. Lettman-Hicks with regards to P&P Communications and her own campaign. When Mr. Gillum and Ms. Lettman-Hicks secured 50,000 dollars in funding from two unnamed organizations, the money was intended to “go out for vote canvassing”, but this did not seem to occur. Other accusations include that they received 250,000 dollars from an unnamed donor but the money went to P&P Communications which gave Mr. Gillum received a “bonus” payment of over 20,000 dollars.
“Make no mistake that this case is not legal, it is political,” Mr. Gillum said after court, “There’s been a target on my back ever since I was the mayor of Tallahassee. They found nothing then, and I have full confidence that my legal team will prove my innocence now.”
Finally, after many files and justifications, Mr. Gillum is exposed for having listed false campaign reports and funding as a report from Tallahassee. These reports will eventually decide the fate of this court case, and many more to come.
