Modern Latin American artists are taking inspiration from Renaissance Art, like the “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” and change or implement their modern styles or pictures to create similar art.

Artists like Walterio Iraheta, Fabian Ugalde, and Salustiano use renaissance styles in their work while adding a modern touch to each piece. Walterio Iraheta had taken inspiration from Rembrandt’s “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” or instead made another version with toys from Mcdonald’s happy meals. Each has a man lying down in the middle while a group of people surrounds the body. She gets these toys from El Salvador stores that sell secondhand U.S. goods and paints them with a layer of gray.

Fabian Ugalde is a Mexican painter who computerizes paintings from “old masters,” painters who worked in Europe before about 1800. Some of these works from which he gained inspiration include the Mona Lisa, the American Gothic, and the one he’s most known for, Vermeer’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring.” He makes it so that you can tell what the painting is from afar, but you can see the individual aspects that are broken down. It looks like a blurry photo of the painting, but the individual elements are parts of the same painting grouped together strategically.

Salustiano uses an authentic Renaissance technique that links his work to European colonialism, and he uses cochineal beetles. He uses them to give him his deep and rich red colors in his paintings, surrounding an almost photo-realistic portrait of people also wearing red clothing. The cochineal beetles were initially brought to Spain from territories conquered by the Europeans during the age of exploration.

Many others have adapted a Renaissance art style while creating their modern art pieces, and each has a unique way of expressing it.
