Ted Kubacki and his family searched for their blind and old golden retriever for several weeks after he disappeared on the 18th of June. After weeks of searching, they were beginning to lose hope, and it didn’t help that someone played a cruel prank on them. Ted said, “We put the kids to bed and got a text saying, ‘We found your dog,’ or ‘I have your dog,’ and we’re like, ‘Oh my god, this is incredible,’” he said. “Then the person texted me, ‘Just kidding.’ This happened, yeah, that was all part of this terrible story.”
Then, a construction crew thought they saw a bear lying in a bush beside the road, but when they got closer, they found out that it was a dog, the Kubacki’s dog, Lulu. When Ted got a call at work saying they had found his dog, he was no longer sad. When he called his wife, everyone was screaming; this is how Ted explained it, “I called my wife from work, and it was just screaming … She just starts yelling, then she yells to the kids. And I just hear them screaming like crazy.”
When they found Lulu, she was in bad condition. She had lost 23 pounds, was dehydrated, and was extremely dirty. When Ted came home, he expected Lulu to jump up and lick his face while wagging her tail, but she couldn’t even lift her head. But with medical care, food, and rest, she slowly recovered. “Slowly but surely, she started eating, and she was kind of able to pick her head up,” Kubacki said. “But then, yesterday, she propped herself up on her front paws by herself, like nestled into me and gave me a kiss and wagged her tail and it was just so great.” The next day, she stood up without help.
After all the celebration, Ted started to worry about the vet bill because he was the provider for the family. But the citizens of Sitka donated hundreds of dollars to cover the fees.
“We have our family member home,” exclaimed Ted.
