In 2025, some laws will help more people in New York City. Things affected will be sick leaves, insulin costs, food reservations, gym membership cancellations, and protections for fashion industry workers.
The New York Times said Governor Kathy Hochul signed over 700 bills that affect people in New York, from insulin prices to restaurant reservations and many other things.
One of the laws is about pregnant employees. The employers have to allow at least 20 hours of rest for the employee for appointments and checkups for the employee.
The second law is about insulin, which is a naturally occurring hormone that’s needed to allow your body to use sugar for energy. Around 1,800,000 adults in New York have diabetes, which is high blood sugar. The New York Times said insulin costs will be capped at 35 dollars per month starting from January 1st. The governor said that it would save the people 14 million dollars this year.
The third law is about restaurant reservations. Before, getting a reservation in a hot restaurant was extremely hard. Benjamin Oreskes, a reporter, said, – “Most of the reservations are scooped up by bots, which in turn can cause chaos for restaurants. Businesses have had trouble getting a clear picture of how many diners they would serve on a nightly basis, and their bottom lines have suffered when reserved tables sit empty.”
Since it is right after New Year’s, many people are following their resolutions, so they might want a membership to a gym or stretching/yoga subscription. When they realize they want to quit, there is a new law that will make it very easy to cancel. The New York Times said, – “Now, when you notify a health club you want to go back to loafing, it must process the cancellation and any refunds within 10 business days.” State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud said that it would empower New Yorkers to do what they want for their health and easily get out of a membership.
The final law is about the fashion industry’s safety. Management of the industry is gaining from a loophole that goes past regulations on when they pay the workers. The New York Times said that the new law makes the industries try their best to appeal to consumers and make ways to report suspicious things.
These things will hopefully help the people of New York to make their lives easier.
