In Paris, A 36-year-old man disguised as an old woman was arrested after throwing a cake at the Mona Lisa. When he was being taken away by authorities he said “‘Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this!’”
In the end, the painting was perfectly fine due to a protective glass sheet that was shielding the painting. This left authorities to clean up the mess.
This wasn’t the first time someone tried to abuse the painting. In the 1950s there was an attempted acid attack, which resulted in the protective glass sheet being put up. Another attempt was in 1911, the painting disappeared and it wasn’t found until two years later when the man tried to sell it to an art dealer who informed authorities. Because of all of these problems the Mona Lisa is now more famous than ever!
