One day, as Lucas was exploring, he went to the next town over, called Rerandij [re-RAN-the-ij]. He snuck up behind the castle without being seen. There, he started climbing up the walls, thinking he might hear some information.
Then, in the window he saw a big red-and-orange dragon with its back facing him. A fire dragon, he thought. Then he heard some chatting behind the dragon. A boy and a man walked in, but they did not see him. Lucas ducked down and listened.
“… We’re going to war with Candellence.” the man said to the boy. “They won’t be prepared and they will lose. I heard they have a dragon there, too. We’re going to take their dragon…”
Oh, no you won’t, Lucas thought. He narrowed his eyes as he climbed down.
He went home. He told Jake all about the conversation.
Jake said, “Then, we have to prepare.”
The next day, the army of Candellence and Lucas met the army of Rerandij at the Plains of Pluton.
“Give us your dragon,” the king of Rerandij said, “or fight us.”
“No way, we’ll never give you Monarch.” Jake said.
“Then, you’ll have to fight us with dragons, your Monarch, and our Fireball,” the king of Rerandij exclaimed. “Attack!”
With a roar, the army of Rerandij charged forward. But then, Monarch stamped his foot and caused an earthquake. , He roared, causing the ground underneath the army of Rerandij to crack and develop holes.
Monarch is an earth dragon, Lucas thought. No wonder they want Monarch so badly.
Fireball roared and opened his mouth, and a giant fiery ball of hot lava and flames came shooting out of his mouth. Monarch charged forward and hissed. A vine came out of the ground and multiplied, wrapping around Fireball. More vines came out of the ground, wrapping around many soldiers. More vines came out of the ground, grabbing toward the evil king’s soldiers.
More balls of fire came out, burning the ground. Swords went clanging to the ground.
Soon, the battle was over, with the Plains of Pluton full of vines and ash and flames. The king of Rerandij was thrown into the dungeon, all the soldiers were killed, the fires in the Plains of Pluton were put out, and Rerandij was taken over by Cadellence. Fireball was put in the same combat training as Monarch.
The boy Lucas saw earlier told Jake and Lucas that he’d always wanted to be free and that he hated that evil king of Rerandij. He also explained that the king threatened to kill his family if he didn’t fight.
“But now,” the boy said. His name was Max, and he continued, “I got what I wanted.”
Lucas had a lot of fun with Max, waiting for more adventures (but hopefully no more battles) to come.
