At Highland Park in Illinois, a mass shooting occurred at a Fourth of July parade. As more of these shootings occur, many parents are beginning to worry about their children’s safety as well as question the responsibility of the shooters’ parents.

The responsibility that can be placed on parents can vary. Some parents take their children to therapists long before shootings occur; they worry about their child’s mental health and seek help without any result. However, most parents do not alert authorities, and some even allow their children to get ahold of dangerous weapons.

The parents of the man involved in the Highland Park shooting were scorned by the public due to evidence that the father sponsored his son to get a firearms license, and that the son had threatened to “kill everyone” but the parents did not alert authorities.

Now, law enforcement is desperately looking for ways to decrease the surge in mass shootings by introducing criminal charges against the parents of the shooter.

Michael Doubet, the lawyer for the parent accused of illegally providing the gun to his son, argues that it circumstances should be different when the shooter is a legal adult. The shooter in question was a 28 year old man, and the lawyer states that, “When people are over the age of 18, they’re beyond their parents’ control.”
