While the Formula One Grand Prix attracts an average of one million viewers each race in America, the “F1 22” game is reaching far more audiences than expected. Lee Mather, the senior director of the game, is happily puzzled by the American racing boom.

F1 22 is released by Codemasters, a British company that has been making the F1 games for more than a decade. F1 series games are initially targeted to the F1-fans, a very defined audience. The recent American racing boom owes largely to their promoting live racing events, marketing the racing drivers, and advertising online culture.

The docuseries Formula One: Drive To Survive, is a fascinating work done by FIA collaborated with Netflix to promote the sport. They offer an unprecedented behind-the-wheel and off-the-track view at the drivers and the sport. In addition, the new generation of drivers are huge celebrities with non-stopping streaming and constant online interaction with fans, which transcend the sport.

“There was a time when Formula One didn’t have YouTube, or Instagram, or Twitch,” Lee Mather said, explaining the reason behind the fast audience blown up, “F1 is always an enchanting world, but as F1 sport evolves into online docuseries and games, youngsters were able to appreciate it on their own terms.”

The F1 game designers have been trying to do a lot of things outside the core of F1 (tire pressure and air condition) to make it easy to play. They gradually introduced steering assistant, automatic reset to track, simplification of the off-track surface, and even artificial intelligence to adjust the pace to keep the player in the battle.

The F1 game’s broadening appeal is through F1 2021- a story-based, single-player mode, where you are a new driver, socializing with the celebrities and racing with ease. They instilled the glamour, intrigue, and fantasy into the game and attracts more and more causal audiences.

All these changes are eventually paid off and the number of the newly minted F1 fans are greatly increased. More challenges are still laying ahead of the F1 game designers, such as how to turn the fresh F1 fans to die-hard fans, and how to entice even more people to the sport.
